The Sunyata Buddhist Center is located in Gaia House - Interfaith Center, at 913 S Illinois Ave., Carbondale, IL (across the street from Southern Illinois University).

Sunyata’s purpose is to serve as a resource for the people of Southern Illinois and beyond by maintaining a library, a meditation space, and engaging in events that further the understanding of Buddhist philosophy and meditation in general.

Sunyata also seeks to promote understanding between the various Buddhist traditions and the other major faith traditions in the world.

Sunyata is always open for meditation any time that the Gaia House is open. . Also, the Shawnee Dharma Group meets for meditation at Sunyata, on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm.

Sunyata is a 5013c non-profit organization.

The SIU Buddhist Fellowship, a registered student organization, is also affilliated with Sunyata Center. Look for us on Facebook soon.

We have established a Registered Student Organization at Southern Illinois University in order to provide a venue for students, faculty, and staff of the university community to study, discuss, and practice Buddhism or Buddhist philosophy. People of all faiths are welcome. We will advocate for human rights and welfare, community service and development, environmental health, relationships and partnerships, and inter-religious dialogue as all are interdependent and equally bound to peace. We welcome your participation.

Our Opening Ceremony was a great success. Please follow this link to read about it in our local press.
